9.
I called for Harry when I got close to the farmhouse. âHarry, come quick!â
Harry hurried to the railing. He was clutching a white envelope.
âWhat is it? Whatâs wrong, Lizzie?â
Before I could answer, Davidâs mother appeared beside Harry. âIs it David? Is he okay?â
âDavidâs fine,â I called back. âHarry, itâs one of the ewes. Sheâs giving birth, but her lambâs stuck, and in a bad way.â
âHow bad?â Harry asked.
âSwollen head, no front legs. Like what happened last year.â
I swear Harry sagged when I told him, like the weight of one more piece of bad news was too heavy to carry. Then he said, âRight. We may need to push the lamb back inside to give the ewe a rest.â
âThatâs what I thought. Iâve got David fetching water and washing the lambâs head. Iâve come for the clean rags and margarine.â
âGood girl. Now go. Iâll meet you there.â He headed for the porch steps, and I ran for the kitchen.
Inside, I washed my hands, then grabbed a tub of margarine from the fridge and the bag of clean rags that Harry kept on the shelf above the washing machine, before racing back outside.
I caught up to him pretty quickly. Harry runs the way old people do, slow and kind of limpy â more like race walking than running. I slowed right down, but Harry said, âGo, Lizzie. Donât wait for me. Every second counts.â
âBut what if Iâm wrong?â
âDo you think youâre wrong?â
I hesitated, then shook my head.
âThen go. Iâm right behind you.â
âOkay,â I said and started running again.
When I got there, David was washing the lambâs face.
âSheâs still alive, Lizzie.â
âGreat job, David. Here.â I handed him some clean rags. âUse these.â
While David wiped the lambâs head, I loaded my hands with gobs of yellow margarine and began the greasing. David helped.
âWhatâs next?â he asked.
âIâll need you to help me push the lamb back inside.â
âMe? Shouldnât Harry do that?â
âWe canât wait for him,â I said, running my fingers from the snout to the crown. It felt slick. We were ready.
âLizzie?â David asked. âHave you ever done this before? Pushed a lamb back inside the mother?â
âOnce. Last year. Harryâs hands were too big to fit beside the lambâs head.â
David was owl-eyed. âBeside the head? Like, inside the ewe?â
âI canât do this without you, David!â
He nodded. âItâs okay, Lizzie. Iâm okay. What do you need me to do?â
âStand up and grab hold of the fleece on either side of Lunaâs butt. Really wrap your hands into her fleece. Youâre going to have to hold her up while I push the lamb. Luna wonât like what Iâm doing. She may try to lie down.â
âCanât we let her lie down if she wants to? I mean, if it makes her more comfortable ⦠?â
âI need her standing, David. If sheâs standing, thereâs more space for me to push the lamb back inside.â
David nodded and I stroked the lambâs head while I waited for him to get in position.
âReady!â David said.
âHere I go.â Flattening the lambâs ears back to make it more streamlined, I slid my hands alongside the lambâs head and inside Luna.
